John 13:34's "love one another" is "PERFORM THE ACT" of LOVE, kind of love
That's right: Jesus didn't just want us to "have" it or "be" it, He "commanded" that we "do" it.
The original Greek word for love here is αγαπατε, which is a verb in the "active" voice form (as opposed to the "middle" and "passive" voice forms).
http://www.preceptaustin.org/new_page_40.htm#ACTIVE VOICE, Greek Verbs Quick Reference, "Voice of Verb" "ACTIVE VOICE":
Verbs in active voice picture the subject as the one who performs, produces or experiences the action or exercises a certain activity. Active voice represents the action as being accomplished by the subject of the verb.
It's performing, producing and/or experiencing the action or activity of love! It's doing love, like "giving" to the poor: charity, or making love like sexually, which produces and experiences the performance of love: Perform or do the "act" of love. So, correctly, Jesus "commanded" them to "perform love with one another," or "perform the act of love with one another." It's like not just wanting to give charity but actually doing it. And, sexually, it's doing the love. And, when one is either giving charity or giving someone sexual pleasure, they are "producing" love. The only difference between charity and sex is that charity is a sacrificial giving, where doing sex is a mutual giving. Both are very important.
"MIDDLE VOICE":
The middle voice indicates the subject performs an action upon himself or herself (reflexive action) or for their own benefit.
So, it's like loving yourself. "Have" or "get" love.
"PASSIVE VOICE":
The passive voice conveys the idea that the SUBJECT is being ACTED UPON by an OUTSIDE force or power. SUBJECT is the RECIPIENT or the RECEIVER of the verbal action or effect. In English passive voice is usually indicated by the phrase "to be".
So, it's like God making you "be in love."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Greek_verbs, Ancient Greek Verbs, "Voices":
Active voice, declares that the subject of the verb is acting and the action is received by another. … (A man is sacrificing an ox)
What would it mean if the man is loving an ox? I mean it's something the man is "performing." That's right, we don't want to even think about that.
Middle voice (or "reflexive voice") often declares that the subject of the verb is acting and the action is received by itself. … (A man is honouring himself)
What would it mean if the man is loving himself?
Passive voice, declares that the subject of the verb is receiving an action acted by another. … (A man is honoured by a man)
What would it mean if the man is loved by a man or God?
An example of agape love in the passive voice would be: Rev. 20:9: "They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves." More of a state of being instead of an act of doing. Or, 1 Thess. 1:4: "For we know, brothers and sisters loved by God, that he has chosen you".
http://www.bcbsr.com/greek/gvoice.html, Voice, "B. Middle Voice":
The active emphasizes the action of the verb; the middle emphasizes the actor [subject] of the verb.
(When we love God in the active form, it can only be accomplished in being good to others.)
The reason this is important to bring up is because today's church has been spending many years trying to falsely imply that John 13:34's kind of love was just state of being or state of mind kind of love, not action kind of love, only to further dismiss the valid sexual connotations. You see, a non-action verb would better discount the action involved in the actual sex act. And, a reciprocal kind of love is definitely a Christian article. Allowing Jesus' "perform the act" order of love strongly suggests a sexual reciprocal. When the New Testament text moved from Greek to Latin, it makes sense that this slight ambiguity would importantly help Christianity be accepted during Middle Age corruption, or such (real, valid) support wouldn't be available for today's revelation. Again, today's definition of Jesus' love for one another to only reside in one's mind or state of being is very phony without action. Nothing can really improve in this world if everyone only loves one another in their minds and only in fake verbal assurances. Today's non-action corruption of Jesus' love between people also fits well with today's artificial salvation cop-outs (absolution or faith alone) in that churchgoers really more seek non-action in their love for God, but Jesus mandated more action to help the poor and needy.
Again, any exclusion to sexual love, which is predominant in even the English word, would need to be mentioned in context. And, by no means did Jesus redefine the word "love." In fact, when He told that it was a "new commandment" that alone would overrule any possible prior or later exclusion of the sexual part. Therefore, ALL characteristics of "love" are His order. Today's Church "just verbally says" it's without sexual implications, and everyone "just" believes it (ref. Random House dicts.: "agape"). MANY people advise me to not be so insulting to mankind, but "gullible" does explain things best.
The true reality of this is that any sexually active single person or gay person could EASILY justify their lifestyle by this DIRECT "JESUS" overruling of ANY possible prior or later non-marital sexual denunciation; which I am finding all to also be corruptions. Whenever there's a contradiction between Jesus and anyone else, Jesus is the One to follow.
